From the recording Into the Night

We were in a beautiful house in Ireland, overlooking Clew Bay, and Maggie was in one half of the house. I was in the other. We'd just finished a very loud 'discussion.' That's when I wrote this song. We've been together almost 40 years, and I'm madly in love with her. But from the beginning she'd say, "Why did you back up that way? That doesn't make any sense. Why didn't you back up this way?" It's occurred to me, now that I've written the song, that if you've been together 40 minutes you know what the song means.

Lyrics

Every time you dance with me
I step on your toes
Why you even dance I don't know
Every time you talk to me
I say something wrong
It's best if we don't talk too long

CHORUS:
'Cause you're the only one I've ever wanted
And I love the very air that you breath
But you say black when I say white
You turn left if I turn right
And I couldn't live without you
Here with me

Every time you dance with me
I step on your toes
Why you even dance I don't know

The fact that you're in love with me
Sometimes makes you mad
And I make it worse because it makes me glad
CHORUS:
Every time you dance with me I step on your toes
How we found each other I don't know
Every time you dance with me I step on your toes
How we stay together I don't know
'Cause every time you dance with me
I step on your toes
