Story

Too many long nights on lonesome roads, hoping to get home. I still remember the melancholy of passing houses with buttery yellow light in the windows, and wondering what it would be like to be there.

Lyrics

The tires on this old car ain't good

And the lights are starting to fade

But I'm gonna push on into the night

'Cause I want to see you again

I don't even know if you're there

'Cause you never wrote, or called me

But just like an old horse headed back to the barn

I just want to be there again

The night sky is dusted with stars

And there's a pale crescent moon on the rise

I've spent my whole life just running from you

And I don't even know why

I've probably waited too long

But even an old fool can learn

So I'm gonna push on into the night

'Cause I want to see you again

Story

Not long ago I asked a friend how he was doing. He said, "I'm just floatin' along, I'm just livin'" I had to imagine what that would be like. Then, talking to Mike's mom, who's 91 years old, we talked about living alone - just her and her dog. Her faithful companion.

Lyrics

Livin' alone in my lonely house

Sliding along on my slippers

I don't have much to talk about

I'm just floatin' along,

I'm just livin'

There's no one here to share a drink with

I eat my meals all alone

There's no one here to play a game of chess

Don't talk to anyone on the telephone

I live alone,

I'm always home

No one here to talk with me

I had a family but they've come and gone

I'm just livin' all alone,

I'm just livin' alone

I had a wife, the love of my life

We didn't have any children

My brother and sister, they don't like me

I don't even know where they're livin'

I had a friend, his name was Tim

He died a year ago

Now that he's gone,

I have no one

It's so hard to go on

I find it hard to go on

Maybe I'll get a dog, something to love

Someone to spend my time with

It would be fun to go for a walk

Just me and my faithful companion

I live alone,

I'm always home

No one here to talk with me

But if I get a dog we could go to the park

Then I'd have someone to walk with me

Livin' alone in my lonely house

Slidin' along on my slippers

Story

We were in a beautiful house in Ireland, overlooking Clew Bay, and Maggie was in one half of the house. I was in the other. We'd just finished a very loud 'discussion.' That's when I wrote this song. We've been together almost 40 years, and I'm madly in love with her. But from the beginning she'd say, "Why did you back up that way? That doesn't make any sense. Why didn't you back up this way?" It's occurred to me, now that I've written the song, that if you've been together 40 minutes you know what the song means.

Lyrics

Every time you dance with me

I step on your toes

Why you even dance I don't know

Every time you talk to me

I say something wrong

It's best if we don't talk too long

CHORUS:

'Cause you're the only one I've ever wanted

And I love the very air that you breath

But you say black when I say white

You turn left if I turn right

And I couldn't live without you

Here with me

Every time you dance with me

I step on your toes

Why you even dance I don't know

The fact that you're in love with me

Sometimes makes you mad

And I make it worse because it makes me glad

CHORUS:

Every time you dance with me I step on your toes

How we found each other I don't know

Every time you dance with me I step on your toes

How we stay together I don't know

'Cause every time you dance with me

I step on your toes

Story

Hanging out with Maggie at the la Concha Hotel in Key West, and the restaurant wall is cluttered with photos of the old big bands in black and white. Mostly Cuban, all dressed to the nines. Musicians standing behind their ornate stands, and I thought 'the angle of saxophones, the curve of the bass.' (And all of life's sweet mysteries fell into place)

Lyrics

The dancing of fingertips

The whisper of sheets

Your kisses like the raindrops

Falling out on the street

Hair soft as an angel's wing

Brushes my face

And all of life's sweet mysteries

Fall into place

No one in the whole wide world

Just me and you

The stereo is playing low

St. Dominic's Preview

The angle of saxophones

The curve of the bass

And all of life's sweet mysteries

Fall into place

CHORUS:

Love takes time

Love heals pain

Love has rules

Love takes time

Ooh, this mood that I'm in

Nothing could be softer

Than your breath on my skin

Floating like two children

Down this river of grace

And all of life's sweet mysteries

Fall into place

CHORUS:

Story

We used to drive all the way home from Nashville to Panama City just so I could see the beach. I watched a full moon one night as I drove, and thought "at least there's one thing I can always count on." That, and the Gulf of Mexico. I hope it's always true.

Lyrics

CHORUS:

I'm holding on to the moon

To keep me hanging around

I'm holding on to the moon

To keep my feet on the ground

I don't dance any more

Now that you're not around

I'm holding on to the moon

'Cause I know the moon

Won't let me down

I'm holding on to my heart

I keep my fingers squeezed tight

I'm holding on to my heart

To make sure it's alright

I don't see anyone

I don't want them around

I'm holding on to my heart

'Cause I know my heart

Won't let me down

I'm holding on to the stars

To keep me safe at night

I'm holding on to the stars

I move in their light

I can't see in the dark

Now that you're not around

I'm holding on to the stars

'Cause I know the stars

Won't let me down

I was holding your hand

When you told me goodbye

I was holding your hand

When you started to cry

You walked out of my life

Brought my world to an end

You took back your hand

Now my hands will never hold you again

Lyrics

CHORUS:

Feel the whip lay on my shoulder

Feel the chain wrapped around my legs

Time is passin' and I'm gettin' older

And I'm wearin' the years that I've had to beg

I was a hungry man at the age of twenty

Felt the need for a woman deep in my bones

But I felt the blow from a hunter's weapon

And they drug me unconscious from my home and now I

CHORUS:

I came thousands of miles across the ocean

In the belly of a ship, I barely survived

I watched people dyin' without any notion

And I spent all my time just wonderin' why I've got to

CHORUS:

I was a hungry girl at the age of twenty

Felt the needs of a woman deep in my bones

But I bowed to pressure from society

I went from my parents to a husband

And now I feel his hands lay on my shoulders

And I feel his fingers wrap around my legs

Time is passin' and I'm gettin' older

And I'm wearin' the years that I've had to beg

I've got chains on my feet

I've got chains on my heart

I've got a foot on the Bible

And one in the grave

I've spent all my years

Just tryin' to survive

And now I don't believe I'll ever be saved

I've got to

CHORUS:

Story

I was driving up the highway when I saw a car along the side of the road. The woman behind the wheel had her head in her hands. When I came back by an hour later she was gone. The car was still there. I thought, "Welcome to the New World."

Lyrics

There's a fox in the hen house

There's a bomb on the plane

Someone that you don't know

Is whispering your name

Into somebody's voice mail

Or an answering machine

Welcome to the New World

You don't look out your windows

You don't pick up the phone

You don't want anyone to know

That you're there all alone

Are those headlights in the driveway?

Did somebody scream?

Welcome to the New World

There's a woman in a car

On the side of the road

Head in her hands

And no place left to go

Her job's on the line

And now the engine blew

There's nothing in her handbag

But a silver .22

There's a stray dog on the street

People sleeping in the woods

The man standing in the shadows

He ain't up to any good

Pickin's are getting slim

Everybody wants their share

Welcome to the New World

There's a woman in a car

On the side of the road

Head in her hands

And no place left to go

She needs to blame somebody

And all she sees is you

She reaches in her handbag

For that silver .22

Welcome to the New World

Welcome to the New World

Lyrics

42 miles out of Pascagoula

And I'm lookin' for a ride

I got my old guitar strapped to my back

And I can 't wait

To have my baby back by my side

I got my thumb stuck in the air

I got a big grin on my face

I'm headed out to the wild, wild West

Just lookin' for a place

To have my baby back by my side

CHORUS:

She cried, 'baby baby baby don't leave me

You're never comin' back again

She don't know how much I love her

And about all of my big plans

To have my baby back by my side

Yonder comes a semi with a heavy load

I think he's stoppin' for me

I'm gonna grab my gear

Climb into that rig

And tell that driver how much I need

To have my baby back by my side

When I get to Oklahoma

Gonna give her a call

I'm gonna ask her to marry me

I'm gonna tell her I love her

And about my plans

And how much I really need

To have my baby back by my side

CHORUS:

Story

Just a rainy day alone.

Lyrics

Sometimes, when my worries gather 'round me

Sometimes, when the rain begins to fall

I doubt myself

I wonder why I'm taking up your time

Sometimes I don't know myself at all

CHORUS:

All I know is I was born to love you

You're all that matters

When my day is through

All I know is there is nothing I have ever done

That means as much

As my love for you

I could build a tower

Or a bridge across the sea

A kingdom, shining like a holy land

Or this whole world could crumble

Like the ashes from a fire

But if I ever lost your love

Please understand

CHORUS:

So when I stumble

When I'm acting foolish

When I cut you with a careless word

I try every day

Just to be a better man

Sometimes I wonder

If I'll ever learn

CHORUS:

Story

Just a note to say the exquisite instrument in the background of this song is called the Hammerchord, designed and built by Robert Cunningham, and played by Ernie Brock.

Lyrics

There are places I would like to go

Maybe France, the Spanish Coast

There are people I would like to meet

Have a drink, a bite to eat

But it wouldn't be the same without you in my life

At all

Maybe we could take a walk

Or a bicycle ride

We could have a lovely talk

We should always take the time

But it really wouldn't be the same

Without you

At all

CHORUS:

There are times when I need to be alone

Have a moment to myself

Talk with friends on the phone

Snuggle down in the bed

With my favorite book

But know you're still there

Somewhere

There are other people in my life

Some I love, some I like

They all have a part to play

In my life, day to day

But it wouldn't be the same

Without you to come home to

And share the moments of my life

There are things that I still like to do

Like take a walk

On a stormy beach with you

Feel your fingers running through my hair

I turn around, and you're still there

Know you'll always be with me

By my side

Eternally

CHORUS:

Story

Do we ever see what's really there?

Lyrics

Am I the person you think I am

When I stand behind you in line?

Am I that older gentleman

Who always seems so kind?

I raped my daughter when she was five

I beat her mother blind

Am I the person you think I am?

I'll show you if you've got the time

Am I the person you think I am

When you see me on the street?

I'm dressed up in designer clothes

From my head down to my feet

I drink myself to sleep each night

I drink to hide the pain

Am I the person you think I am?

Do you want to know my name?

Am I the person you think I am?

Am I a family man?

You see me with my kids and wife

We're walking hand in hand

I've got a woman on the side

She takes my breath away

Am I the person you think I am?

You see me every day

Am I the person you think I am

When I smile and say hello?

Am I the person you think I am?

You'll never really know

I have a dark world in my head

I let nobody in

Am I the person you think I am?

Take a look at me again

Don't you?

Lyrics

Don't you love it when the mornin' comes?

'You wake up singin' a song

Birds are flyin', children are laughin'

Everybody's singin' along

CHORUS:

Don't you love it when the mornin' comes?

Don't you love it when the mornin' comes?

Don't you love it when the sun is out

The trees are shiny and green?

Children are playin' out on the lawn

Makes you want to sing

CHORUS:

Don't you love it when I call your name?

You make me feel so proud

It makes me happy just to look at you

I want to shout out loud

CHORUS:

Don't you love it when the night is near?

The sky is a purple hue

It's the perfect time for makin' love

And I will sing for you

CHORUS:

Don't you love it when the night is black?

The stars are shinin' bright

We'll go dancin' out on the lawn

And we'll kiss in the pale moonlight

CHORUS:

Story

My mama really did rock me to sleep with the sound of trains. She also taught me to yodel. Thanks, mom.

Lyrics

I was born to Honky-Tonk

'Cause I like cattin' around

I love to hear a steel guitar

And Hank's high, lonesome sound

My mama rocked her baby

By the railroad track

To the rollin' of a late-night train

Oh, how it moaned my lullaby

To the rhythm of the fallin' rain

YODEL

I was born to Honky-Tonk

I love those Honky-Tonk gals

I like to drink my liquor

Play my guitar

With some of my worthless pals

I can yodel like a cat

On a hot tin roof

Never give me water

Make it 90 proof

I'm having a ball, and that's the truth

'Cause I was born to Honky-Tonk

YODEL

I was born to Honky-Tonk

'Cause I like cattin' around

I love to hear a flat-picked guitar

With that Johnny Russell sound

My mama rocked her baby

By the railroad track

To the rollin' of a late-night train

Oh, how it moaned my lullaby

To the rhythm of the fallin' rain

YODEL

Lyrics

She tells the truth with a twist

She throws out lies

With the flick of her wrist

She's always got an alibi

And the truth ain't in her

She'll knock you down with one small word

She's really good

At making people look absurd

She's got a knack for being mean

And the truth ain't in her

I watch her walk through the room

She sweeps up men

Like a bitch with her broom

As she looks from eye to eye

Yeah, the truth ain't in her

You know I've seen her kind before

She gets a lot

But she's always wantin' more

And you won't know how bad she is

'Cause the truth ain't in her

And if you think she's gonna change

And all those others

That she screwed were just so strange

You'd better watch each step you take

'Cause the truth ain't in her

No, the truth ain't in her
